ToggleThe Kargil War - A Brief Overview:
The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil Conflict, was a major armed conflict that took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir in the summer of 1999. The war was the result of an attack by Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants on Indian territory. Their aim was to cut off the strategically important Srinagar-Leh highway. The invasion was strategically planned to take advantage of the difficult terrain and catch Indian forces off guard.
The war was a shock to India because it was a largely unexpected attack. The Indian Army reacted quickly and launched “Operation Vijay” to drive out the attackers and retake the captured positions. The operation was a testament to the strength, courage and unwavering determination of the Indian soldiers . Our soldiers fought in adverse conditions at high altitudes and in extreme weather.
