Every year, on the 26th of July, India observes Kargil Diwas. This day is dedicated to honour the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War. Kargil Diwas serves as a solemn reminder of the bravery and dedication of the Indian armed forces in protecting the nation’s sovereignty and defending its borders.
The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil Conflict, was a major armed conflict that took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir in the summer of 1999. The war was the result of an attack by Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants on Indian territory. Their aim was to cut off the strategically important Srinagar-Leh highway. The invasion was strategically planned to take advantage of the difficult terrain and catch Indian forces off guard.
The war was a shock to India because it was a largely unexpected attack. The Indian Army reacted quickly and launched “Operation Vijay” to drive out the attackers and retake the captured positions. The Kargil War lasted almost three months, during which intense fighting took place in regions such as Dras, Kaksar, and Batalik. The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in the war. They provided air support to the ground forces, which helped to decide the war in India’s favour.
Despite numerous challenges, the Indian Army eventually succeeded in recapturing all posts occupied by the invaders. On July 26, 1999, India officially declared the successful completion of “Operation Vijay”. The war, however, came at a high price. Many brave soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice to defend their motherland.
