The legendary Rajinikanth will be playing a character named Deva in “Coolie.” Lokesh Kanagaraj shared his excitement on X, posting, “Superstar @rajinikanth sir as #Deva in #Coolie. Thank you so much for this @rajinikanth sir. It’s going to be a blast.”

The newly released poster features Rajinikanth holding a number tag typically worn by coolies, with the number 1421 written on it. The tag stands out in vivid color against the otherwise monochrome backdrop. In the poster, Rajinikanth wearing a dark shirt and a dog tag around his neck, adding a touch of ruggedness to his character’s look.

Meet the Six Characters of “Coolie”

While Rajinikanth’s Deva is at the forefront of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “Coolie,” the film introduces several other intriguing characters that help shape this world. Here’s a closer look at the characters unveiled so far:

  • Daya: Played by Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir, Daya’s character is distinguished by his accessory, a watch, which seems to be significant to his role.
  • Simon: Telugu actor Nagarjuna takes on the role of Simon, another character who also carries a watch and a red scarf, suggesting a possible connection or rivalry with Daya.
  • Preethi: Shruti Haasan portrays Preethi, who appears intense and formidable in her character poster, gripping a shovel tightly. This hints at her strong and possibly rebellious nature in the narrative.
  • Rajasekhar: Veteran actor Sathyaraj plays Rajasekhar, with a striking red wire entangled around his hand. The accessory suggests a deeper, perhaps sinister involvement in the film’s plot.
  • Kaleesha: Kannada actor Nimma Upendra brings to life the character of Kaleesha, holding a fish hook, which could symbolize his connection to fishing or a metaphorical tie to the underworld.

All the character posters have a distinct monochrome theme, with the accessories highlighted in gold, adding an element of mystery and intrigue.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Filmography

Coolie

“Coolie” marks Lokesh Kanagaraj’s seventh directorial venture. He began his journey with the 2016 anthology “Aviyal” and quickly gained recognition with his 2017 thriller “Maanagaram.” However, it was the 2019 Karthi-starrer “Kaithi” that truly put him on the map, laying the foundation for the now-celebrated Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU).

Following the success of “Kaithi,” Lokesh directed “Master” in 2021, which was another significant hit. He continued to expand the LCU with “Vikram” in 2022 and “Leo” in 2023. As he now directs “Coolie,” fans are eagerly speculating whether this film will also tie into the LCU.

Recently, the “Coolie” team was spotted filming in Visakhapatnam, further building anticipation for what Lokesh Kanagaraj has in store with this project. With an ensemble cast and the promise of intense storytelling, “Coolie” is shaping up to be another exciting addition to Indian cinema.

Will “Coolie” be part of the LCU, or will it stand alone as a unique offering from Lokesh Kanagaraj? Only time will tell, but fans are certainly in for a treat!
