Long ago, in South India, there lived a brave and wise king named Vishnuvardhana. He ruled the Hoysala Empire from the year 1108 AD to 1152 AD. He was one of the most important kings in Indian history.
Who Was Vishnuvardhana?
Before he became king, Vishnuvardhana was known as Bitti Deva. He was a prince of the Hoysala family. Vishnuvardhana became king after his father died. He later met a wise teacher named Ramanujacharya, who taught him about Vaishnavism—a religion that teaches love for Lord Vishnu.
After learning from Ramanujacharya, Bitti Deva changed his name to Vishnuvardhana, which means “one who increases the strength of Lord Vishnu.”

Vishnuvardhana was very brave. He wanted to make his kingdom stronger, so he fought many wars.
- He fought against the Chola Empire and won. This made the Hoysalas more powerful.
